Heinz to phase out BPA in baby food packaging
Heinz announced today that it will move to BPA-free packaging for baby food products.
The phase out has already begun, with canned baby foods the first priority. Heinz infant formula cans do not contain BPA.
Heinz has joined some of Australia’s biggest retailers in phasing out products containing Bisphenol A (BPA).
Parliamentary Secretary for Health Mark Butler yesterday announced a phase out by major retailers of baby bottles containing BPA.
While international and Australian food authorities have all declared BPA in food packaging completely safe, Heinz has acknowledged a level of consumer concern about BPA in baby food packaging by pursuing this voluntary phase out.
Heinz General Manager, Quality, Jim Xaiz said Heinz was Australia’s leading and most trusted brand of baby food for more than 50 years and continued to listen and respond to the needs of its customers.
“Australia’s food standards authority, FSANZ concludes that “the levels [of BPA in food packaging] do not pose a risk to public health for any age group” Similarly, the USFDA advises that “the benefit of a stable source of good nutrition outweighs the potential risk from BPA exposure,” Mr Xaiz said.
“While we believe there is no risk to consumers, we are keen to allay any concern and so have opted to remove BPA from all baby food packaging,” he said.
